Red Maple (Acer rubrum) – Between road and sidewalk. Significant stress and lower trunk bark damage.

    OPTIONS:

$20 Prune out dead leader, dispose of debris

$100 Cut grass as low as possible in 5′ x 4′ area centered on tree trunk. Add triple-shredded hardwood mulch. Kill grass that grows through this mulch by applying herbicide. This prevents herbicide from contacting any tree roots that might be at the soil surface. Timing could be tricky this year as Bermuda grass enters dormancy in mid-October and won’t absorb herbicide at that point. May need to return in the spring to apply herbicide once the grass starts growing again.

$190 Cut down. Dig up stump. Remove wire cage and burlap that were likely left in by the original installer. Dig out sod in 5’x4 area, shake soil of roots (depends on results of 811). Dispose of debris.

Recommend watering once per week or every two weeks in hot, dry summer periods to help lower stress on the tree.

*** Tree is in poor condition, so the best options are likely pruning+water or removal and replacement
